An early morning weekday run. {And kids say the darndest things.}

First of all, I wanted to thank everyone SO much for all the wonderful comments and support you posted on my failblog yesterday. I know we all have a terrible run from time to time, but hearing your stories and great advice really helped me feel worlds better. Because of you, I woke up this morning ready to take on the 10K that I had planned. I even mapped myself a new route and that further helped me feel like I was getting a fresh start.

The only day I typically go out in the early morning is on Saturday when I do my long run. The rest of the week I go out on my lunch breaks because my mornings are usually so swamped with getting myself ready, getting the little person fed and dressed, daycare drop offs, coffee pick ups, on-time arrivals to work, and frankly the idea of waking up at 4:30 am to fit in a run is really unattractive to me when I could just do it mid-day.

Wednesdays my husband is usually off work though – it sounds more awesome than it is…the trade off is that he works Saturdays – and he hangs with our daughter all day. So this morning I felt compelled to set my alarm for 6 and head out for my last planned run before my 10K race on Saturday morning.

Nothing too interesting had a chance to happen while I was out there, but my new route was awesome with some challenging rolling hills. I finally got my outfit right and didn’t feel too hot or cold. One of my favorite comments that was left on my post yesterday was from my awesome blogfriend Irishrunnerchick, who told me that usually after she has a miserable run, she comes back with a fantastic one. Today I ran my fastest post-injury 10K and according to Map My Run I set several PRs on the hills I have been running around my neighborhood for ages. That definitely put a smile on my face.

Plus I was treated to a beautiful sunrise and now that I’ve gotten it out of the way, I am free to join my daughter and husband for lunch today. Wins all around! As much as I don’t love waking up early, I do love starting my day with those running endorphins. Better than Starbucks!

I’m still drinking a Starbucks right now though.

Carousels are her favorite. I take her to the zoo regularly and buy the ride pass so she can go as many times as she wants. She likes to pick a different animal every time. Usually I am motion sick by the end of all this, but she’s worth it.

Anyway she just keeps getting more hilarious and awesome with every passing day. And more attitudey, but she’s 2 so that’s to be expected. In my opinion, little kids are the funniest people on the planet. They have no filter and will just say whatever pops into their minds and it’s totally acceptable and cute when they do it.

I wish it was acceptable and cute for me to say whatever I was thinking at all times.

Before I had Betty, that was one thing I looked forward to about having a child. Now she’s here, she talks A LOT, and the completely innocent and LOLZ-inducing comments have started. Last night was one of her best.

We had gone to my mom’s house for dinner. As we were leaving out of her complex we saw a man running on the side of the road. He was a older guy with white hair and a white beard. When I see people running, I always get really excited for them so as I drove toward him, I gave him a wave, a thumbs up and told him he was awesome. He smiled and waved at me in return. It was such a nice exchange and then suddenly here’s Betty in the backseat yelling, “HO HO HOOOOOOO!!!” at the top of her lungs.

He had to have heard her. The windows were way open because it’s finally nice enough outside for that sort of thing. I started laughing so hard, I almost drove off the road.

Running Santa

So if anyone was wondering what Santa does in the off-season, Betty would like to inform you that he runs around her Nana’s neighborhood in Baltimore. Obviously.

I must say he was looking pretty fit too. All the cookie eating must not be a year-round thing.

Spreading the Health! {Friday Five Link-Up!}

You know that tragic Rebecca Black song about it being Friday? Of all the songs out there about Friday, THAT would have to be the one that has been stuck in my head all morning long. But just the chorus on a loop because that’s the only part of the song I’ve ever heard.

I really love the topic this week. Sharing my outlook on healthy living and fitness with my family, friends, and even strangers who care – and let’s face it…probably some people who really don’t care and wish I would just STFU already – has become a really big part of my life since I became a mom, a runner, and gotten myself into the best shape of my life post-pregnancy. I get heaps of joy out of motivating other people. One of my favorite things in the world – second only to someone complimenting me on how polite my toddler is – is when someone tells me that I inspired them to run, or try yoga, or do anything new that got them to step outside their comfort zone.

5 Ways that Salt Spreads the Health!

1. THIS BLOG!

Shocking, I know. 🙂 The truth is, I started this blog with the intention of it being only for me; a place where I could write about my training and accomplishments and stuff about my life in general. I didn’t think anyone would actually read it or care about what I have to say. But then people did start reading it and the responses and the connections I have made have been so amazing. I’m just a regular mom with a big mouth who works full time and doesn’t have a lot of spare time. I hope that I can be some kind of motivation for others to achieve their goals when they feel like life is getting really overwhelming.

2. Telling someone when they need a break.

As important as exercise is to maintain a healthy lifestyle, I think it’s just as important to take some time for yourself to do things that you really enjoy. This doesn’t have to be anything fitness related. My husband has a really stressful job. He is also a hobbyist and loves to build and paint models, but with all the stress from work this hobby fell by the wayside for awhile. I spent a long time encouraging him to pick the paintbrush back up and finally he did and is having so much fun with it all over again (and doing some really excellent work too!) Work is still stressful, but by setting aside some time to take care of his mind and do something that makes him really happy, I know the edge has been taken off at least a little.

3. Being a positive role model.

This is getting easier and easier for me now that Betty is getting older. As her mom, I want her to follow her own path in life, but I do hope that I can set a good example for her and this became apparent the other day when she woke up early from her nap. I was about to do an ab video so I gave her a snack and put it on anyway. She joined me on the floor announcing “I DO IT!” and actually did her version of the exercises all the way through with me! I was stunned and more than a little proud. She has also run in her own event – the Play 60 Fun Run last September. She was the youngest one out there!

I hope this is just the beginning of her appreciation for fun, physical activity. I’d love for her to run in a real race with me one day! (No pressure though obviously!)

4. Encouraging healthy habits.

From finally convincing my husband that it is important for him to eat during the day and not just have a giant dinner when he gets home, to talking friends into starting Couch to 5K and then signing up for a race with me. I encourage healthy habits – no matter how small – however I can in the most non-annoying way possible, of course.

5. A network of healthy friends!

This journey started for me in a Facebook group of moms with kids all born around the same time as my Betty who were looking to get back into shape post-baby. We still continue to motivate and inspire each other daily with accountability check ins, sharing recipes and new work outs, and just cheering each other on. These women are amazing. HUNDREDS of pounds have been shed. First 5K, 10K, half marathons, and marathons have been run. It’s so awesome to see these changes in people and the fresh new outlooks on life that have come along with them! My sole sister Helly is a co-moderator of the group with me as well as our wonderful friend Amy who has been on the most spectacular fitness journey! I don’t know what I’d do without those girls. I probably wouldn’t even be a runner now!

A life without running is not something I even want to think about. 🙂
