I need a weekend to recover from my weekend.

I’m thinking work might be a welcome break from the jam-packed, wine-filled, celebration bonanza that was my weekend. I love birthdays, but it’s a good thing they only come once a year. Here’s a little recap of some of the highlights!

A Birthday Wish Come True

I got some very cool presents for my birthday. New running shoes! New yoga clothes! A new wine aerator! A new Magic Bullet that I’m going to use to smoothie every damn thing in the house! All these things are awesome, but the one thing I really REALLY wanted for my birthday was something that wouldn’t cost a dime, but would be completely priceless to me:

I wanted to run.

The plan was to wait until after I see Dr. D again on Tuesday, but when I got to the gym on Saturday morning my leg was feeling pretty normal. I decided to try a mile just to see how it went. You guys, I was so scared. Not just because of the possibility of re-hurting myself, but also how it would negatively affect the rest of my day if I did experience a lot of pain. I tried to keep my expectations low as I fired up the treadmill.

Guess what? It felt okay. Definitely not perfect, but not bad either. 1 mile turned into a 5K where I made myself stop so I wouldn’t overdo it. I finished up my last mile at a 7:30 pace, stretched for a good 1o minutes, and hopped on the bike for a little while to get some different movement into my muscles. The endorphin rush was better than birthday cake. And trust me, I ate A LOT of birthday cake this weekend.
(There I go with the shoddy treadmill phone photography again!)

As I’m writing this my calf is a little sore, but nothing that a couple Advils shouldn’t be able to take care of. This was truly the best birthday present I could have gotten after 2 solid weeks of rest. Oh running, how I have missed you.

A Bouncy Party

This year we had decided to have Betty’s party at that bouncy house place because planning her first birthday had been so stressful. I figured that the less things I had to worry about, the less anxiety I would have. Well as it turns out, not really having to do any planning of a birthday party is also stressful for me. I was a ball of nerves. It was all for nothing though because everyone had a great time! Especially the birthday girl who once again powered through with next to nothing in the nap department.

We had the venue for 2 hours and it flew by. I probably could have really used a nap afterward, but instead opted for more coffee, shortly followed by wine, a margarita, and later on drinks out with friends. What? Bouncing around made me really thirsty.

Sunday Funday

I don’t think I have to explain why I had a rockin’ headache when I woke up, but I also felt like I might have been fighting something off. (Skimping on the sanitizer at all these kid germ factories I’ve been visiting lately, I guess.) I had almost entirely lost my voice and was feeling pretty vile. I pushed myself through a morning yoga class, both because I knew I needed it for my leg and usually inversions make me feel better, but we still ended up missing another bouncy house birthday party that we were supposed to attend that afternoon. With the time change and everything, B was better off not missing another nap anyway.

At 4pm though I got a real treat…for our anniversary my husband booked me a massage appointment, letting them know that I had a leg injury and to pay special attention to that area. I knew I married him for a reason.

The masseuse was GREAT. I’m pretty sure there was a puddle of drool on the carpet under my face and I caught myself starting to snore several times.

Then from there it was dinner with my family and enjoying the fact that the sun didn’t set until after 7pm. I love springing forward. Which brings us to this morning…

Sucker Punched

Remember when I said I thought I might have been fighting something off? Apparently “something” was a stomach virus which is why I’m posting this blog now and not in the morning. I think I’ve been awake for a total of maybe 2 hours today and I’m feeling at least slightly better now than I was so let’s hope a good night of sleep tonight will have me back to normal tomorrow. It’s supposed to be in the 60’s and I’d really like to go for a run.

Ever Wondered What I Sound Like?

Now you can hear my annoying voice! A couple weeks ago I was interviewed for a podcast called The Lifestyle Accountability Show. It was a lot of fun, even though I felt like I sounded totally stupid. Well my interview went live yesterday! So if you want to listen to me talk about running, my fitness, my blog, stuff I eat, my kid, and why my nickname is Salt, you can check it out here.

Wanna know something else exciting? The Hydrapak SoftFlask giveaway ends tonight at midnight! So if you haven’t entered yet and you want to, CLICK HERE. Winner announced tomorrow!

I still owe Ben a picture of me doing a bite valve demo while standing on my head. I didn’t forget!!

I hope you have all had a much better day than I did!

The Friday Five! {Spring in my step!}

OMG is it Friday already? This week sure went by fast! Not that I’m complaining or anything although I am a little stressed out today. Betty’s party is tomorrow and while I didn’t actually have to do much of anything to prepare for it outside of ordering invitations, snacks, and favors – I did it that way on purpose after driving myself completely insane last year – I’m still kind of anxious about it. I just want everyone to have a good time! Although I guess how could you not while bouncing around in a giant inflatable playground eating cake.

Anyway, seeing as it’s Friday I’m linking up again with the lovely DC Trifecta – that’s my birthday weekend buddy Mar, Cynthia, and Courtney – for the Friday Five.

The way this winter has gone, I don’t think we needed some dumb groundhog to tell us that springtime weather was going to be late this year. Looking outside my window right now at all the filthy snow piled up everywhere, winter is starting to feel a little never ending. Fortunately the Accuweather forecast is starting to show a nice warming trend that I hope will stick around this time because there’s so much fun stuff to look forward to around here! And this crap weather is just not going to cut it.

1) More daylight!!!

Oh thank god the days are about to get longer! In my humble opinion there are few things more depressing than leaving work in the dark and while it has been getting progressively lighter since December, it’s usually dusky by the time I have done daycare pickup and run whatever errands we have to run before heading home. One of my favorite things about spring and summer is being able to feed my child dinner and then take her on a walk or to the playground before we start bedtime routine. For the past few months none of these things have been in the cards for us, but I think she must know it’s coming because the playground is a hot topic of convo in my house lately. My head might explode if I have to deal with many more days of explaining why? why? why? why? why? why? why? we can’t go there after dinner. Hurry up, spring.

“No” is quickly losing its most-overused-word top spot to “why?” and “mine”. “Mine” is definitely the worst.

2) Nothing but flowers!

I think the first time I see a daffodil around here, I’m going to weep with happiness. Winter is just so dismal in Charm City. The leafless trees. A sky that always seems to be gray and cloudy. Brown grass. I’m ready for a little color and we have no shortage of beautiful blooms around here. There is an amazing tulip garden in the city called Sherwood Gardens that reaches its peak around the end of April and beginning of May. Last year I took Betty a bunch of times and just let her run wild. This year will probably be more fun because she won’t be trying to eat all the plants.

3) Cute sandals {& more pedicures}!

Here’s something you probably didn’t know about me: I hate wearing shoes. Unfortunately I can’t walk around barefoot all the time because I live in a city and I’d probably step on something terrible. Or even worse, I wouldn’t be allowed into any restaurants. The next best thing is sandals and besides my ever-growing collection of running shoes, they take up the most space in my closet. Sure my feet aren’t nearly as cute in sandals as they used to be, but I don’t care. I can cover up my busted toenails with pretty polish. I am 100x more likely to go get a pedi in the spring/summer because in the winter what’s the point? No one will see it anyway and it just gets ruined as soon as I put my boot back on.

4) Running outside without 10 layers of clothing!

Okay so at this point I’d love to be running dressed in any number of clothing layers, but I know my day is coming and it will be SO NICE to not have to bundle up. The only thing I will miss about running in the freezing cold is eating half-frozen GU at the end. Especially the salted caramel. Mmmmmm.

5) It’s marathon time!

I think I am equal parts looking forward to this and really, really afraid of the day actually arriving. The fact that I’ve been dealing with this leg thing and also the extreme cold has me feeling so glad that I chose a late May marathon. My training would have been a complete bust if I had signed up for one of the earlier races I was looking at. I currently have about 2.5 months to make sure everything is just right before I attempt my first 26.2 with quite a few fun smaller races in between. I hope I’ll be as ready for Bob Potts as I am ready for spring RIGHT NOW!

Thanks so much to the DC Trifecta for keeping Friday fun! And a very special happy birthday to Mar! I hope your day is as amazing as you are!

Of course there’s another birthday this weekend too.

I’ll be 36 tomorrow. OMG. If you need me I’ll be drinking wine in a bouncy house.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

The happiest, funnest, most non-stop, ice-cream filled, exhausting birthday EVER.

Yesterday was SO MUCH FUN, but also completely and utterly exhausting. For mommy and daddy anyway. This little 2 year old was still trying every excuse in the toddler book to get out of bedtime last night.

My day started off here:

See how it’s still dark? That’s because it was 5-and-change o’clock in the morning. I hit up a 6am class so that I could hopefully be home to get things set up for the birthday girl before she woke up. And I was. Much like any other proper human being, she chose her birthday as the one day in a loooong time to sleep in. I actually had to go in and wake her up. Because…

…PRESENTS!!! My husband got the best video of her reaction to seeing that the birthday fairy had arrived. The wrapped package in the stroller contains her new doll and the ones in the crib have a feeding set for aforementioned doll and a Leaptop learning computer.

Then it was off to a special birthday breakfast at a local diner. She brought along her new laptop because sometimes you just have work to do even if it’s your birthday.

Please note how she dressed herself for the occasion in purple Mardi Gras beads.

We were paying for breakfast and the nice lady at the counter asked Betty if she would like a birthday cookie. I thought this sounded fine…I mean, I sure as hell wouldn’t be turning down a free cookie on my own birthday. So she took Betty to the baked goods and let her pick one out.

She returned with the mother of all birthday cookies.

That thing is literally the size of her head. Luckily my child is an anomaly and doesn’t really go insane with sweets. She had like three bites and then said “all done”. Of course I saved it for later and may have also helped myself to a little of it.

After breakfast, it was off to this cool indoor playground to burn off some energy and giant birthday cookies.

Holy over-stimulation. One would think a kid would really need a nap after spending a couple hours in this place. After waking up so early and all this excitement, I sure needed one. So after a quick run to Target, we headed home to rest for a couple hours.

Did you know that apparently naps aren’t cool on your birthday until you’re an adult? I learned that yesterday.

No naps to be had for any Betty or mommy in the house. Instead I made lunch and we played with her new birthday toys for awhile before heading out yet again to spend the afternoon at Charm City’s awesome children’s museum, Port Discovery!

Check out that monstrosity! We climbed up the inside of it from the ground all the way up to the third floor. It’s for kids so there were a couple times when we had to crawl through an obscenely small space and almost had a claustrophobia-induced panic attack, but Betty loved it. The museum also has lots of other fun activities, the favorite being a Waterworks room where you put on a raincoat and Crocs and basically get soaked. It is the only time in my life I will be caught dead in Crocs.

By this point we were all starving so we took her to Red Robin for dinner which is one of the three restaurants we go to where she is guaranteed to eat something. We told the waitress that it was her birthday and they clapped, sang, and brought her a giant sundae.

She didn’t need any help with this one.

Considering she never napped, I am impressed that she didn’t turn into a raving maniac at any point during the day. In fact, she didn’t even want to go to bed when we got home and still managed to wake up extra early because she wanted to play with her new doll. I passed out shortly after she did last night though so I was marginally more functional plus how can I say no to someone who greets me in the morning with “Mommy, I miss you.”

I can’t believe my little girl is 2 years old. And I can’t believe we have done all this celebrating already and we still haven’t gotten to her party yet. Her first birthday was fun, but this was just so so so much more and as exhausting as it was, I think it will stick in my mind as one of my favorite days ever.

Oh and another great thing I woke up to this morning was this email:

Looks like all my eye crossing worked!! Now I have until March 23 to re-learn how to run 9 miles. 🙂

What is your favorite birthday memory? If you have kids, what age was a favorite for you?
