Workout Roundup! {May 25 – 31, 2015}

Happy June, everyone!! I celebrated the new month with an awesome weekend full of running, good food, attending a baseball game on the surface of the sun, and getting some brand new ink:

“Keep moving forward” was my mantra as I struggled at the end of the NJ Marathon and now with everything else going on in my life it has become even more significant. I am in LOVE with this tattoo. And for anyone who has ever heard horror stories about getting your ribs done, I can assure you that it really doesn’t hurt.

Now on to the workouts from last week! It was a great week yet again.

Monday, May 25: Memorial Day and I was off work. Betty and I had plans to attend a BBQ in the afternoon, so I took her to the gym playroom in the morning and did some treadmill intervals. 1 mile warm up @ 8:22, 6×400’s with 400m recover (total time 22:12), and 1 mile cool down @ 8:22. The final 2 repeats were the fastest treadmill intervals I had ever attempted and this run felt fantastic! I also did some abs and then negated all my hard work by stuffing my face with cheeseburgers.

Tuesday, May 26: Woke up early for some living room strength training and then Betty was with her dad in the evening so I took my bike over to the trail for a 16 mile ride. I knocked something like 7 minutes off the last time I went out for that distance, so I felt pretty bad-a when I was done.

Wednesday, May 27: 5 sweaty, nasty, FABULOUS miles.

Thursday, May 28: One of my favorite ways to double up workouts right now is waking up extra early and doing a treadmill 5K before Body Pump. Due to time constraints I usually have to wrap up class after biceps so I feel like I get a lot more accomplished for the day when I run those 3.1 miles first! I made up for the fact that I missed out on the ab portion in the evening.

Also something really exciting happened for me on Thursday afternoon. I can’t wait to tell you guys all about it, but I don’t think I’m supposed to mention it anywhere yet. Sorry not sorry for the cliffhanger. 🙂

Totally. I worked hard last week and deserved it.

Saturday, May 30: I had some kind of long run planned. I would have liked to do 8 and figured that going out around 8am would allow me to do this. Except that no…it ended up being brightly sunny, 80 degrees, and 5600% humidity.

So I ran 7 (7:40 pace) and got quite a few smiles from people along the way when they read my shirt.

Sunday, May 31: 3 treadmill miles (8:04 pace), 30 minutes elliptical and then LOTS of walking around the city yesterday!

The only thing that could have made this day better—besides it not being so damn hot out—would be if we won the game. Maybe next time.

Totals: 23+ running and 16 on the bike. Lots of cross training!

My main goal for this week is fixing my water bottle cage on my bike. It started coming loose at around mile 12 of my Tuesday ride and proceeded to annoy me for the rest of the time I was out there. Hopefully there is something in my house I can use to screw it back on.

I’m also looking forward to celebrating NATIONAL RUNNING DAY on Wednesday and have big news for tomorrow as well…

I’M GOING TO BE IN A KICKSTARTER VIDEO!!

I know some of  you might be aware that Lily Trotters (aka my go-to compression socks!) have been working toward filming a Kickstarter video. Well now it’s happening and I am so honored to have been asked to be one of the featured athletes! I will definitely be posting more information about this as I have it. 🙂

5 Reasons I’m cheating on my running shoes. Just a little bit. {The Friday Five}

It has been WAY too long since I hung out with my favorite DC gals. I HAVE MISSED YOU!!!

This week Mar, Cynthia, and Courtney have given us free reign over the topic so I’m going to talk about my new obsession.

Yellow was never my favorite color until now. I’ve posted about my Salsa Warbird a couple times on here before, but as the weeks have flown by I’m finding myself fall more and more in love with him. Because he’s a him. He still needs a name though and I’m open to suggestions.

Here are 5 reasons I’m LOVING THE BIKE lately.

1) Getting dirty.

All sweat aside, I never realized what a clean sport running was by comparison until I started riding a bike. This past Tuesday I went out for 16 miles on the rail trail near my house and it wasn’t until the end that I realized I was splattered with filth and mud all the way up my legs. There’s something very satisfying about getting so dirty while exercising.

2) The downhills.

They feel like I’m flying! There are some  good hills near my house and I’m finding that I love going as fast as possible down them. It’s scary and exhilarating. So far I’ve topped out at around 30 MPH and I’m excited to go faster.

3) The scene. 

Much like the awesome network of runners in my area, there is also a great bike scene. People are so friendly! A good friend of mine is a big part of the social bike scene in Baltimore and added me to a bunch of different group rides. I’m so excited to participate in some of these!

4) Transportation.

Way more fun than driving and faster than I can go on foot. Now that I’ve grown more comfortable riding with traffic I want to ride EVERYWHERE. I just need to get myself a lock so that no one steals my bike.

5) Just look at HIM!!!

He’s so pretty I can hardly stand it!! My helmet matches, making me EXTRA visible.

The only downside to all of this is that biking is even more expensive than running. My friend, Fireman Chip, told me that—much like running shoes—the correct number of bikes that one is supposed to own is “N+1”. I’m a total newb and can already see how that’s true. Then there’s the gear. I need gloves. I need pants with padding in the butt. I need a tool kit just in case I get a flat while I’m out riding, which knowing me would totally happen at some point.

The list just keeps on growing and I don’t even mind it.

So who has some bike name suggestions for me??

Bike Salt Bike?

I think it’s time that I created another page at the top of my blog.

Because I got a bike!!!!

I haven’t owned a bike since 2008 when I moved back from California and had to leave my mountain bike behind. This one is SO MUCH COOLER than that one was.

He – because I’ve decided this bike is a male – is a Salsa Warbird gravel bike. Originally when I started shopping I was looking for a road bike, but the Warbird ended up being the much better choice for everything that I intend to be doing, such as riding on the road or on the NCR trail up to Pennsylvania or on this one street near my house that they doing construction on right now and I nearly shattered my teeth bouncing over the chewed up asphalt.

I also got a bright yellow helmet to match. I am EXTREMELY visible.

So of course the first question I got asked when I posted a picture of my new bike on Instagram and Facebook?

Are you doing a tri!?

Yes. I don’t know which one yet and I’m going to need to get a lot more comfortable in the water first, but I will absolutely be taking on that challenge by the end of the year hopefully.

Another thing that is potentially on the horizon is a century ride in early October, but the biggest challenge there will be finding the time to train.

I’ve already been out for a couple rides this week and I’m LOVING it especially the adrenaline rush I get when I’m flying down a really big hill. I even suffered my first bike-related injury while on a 16 mile ride the other evening.

Okay so it was super minor; my shin caught my pedal. But I still felt like a total badass when I noticed I was bleeding.

I think this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
